Care Instructions
For those who may be less familiar with how to take care of paintings in the various mediums, I offer the following suggestions:
Pastel Paintings
Oil pastel and soft pastel paintings will last for generations if handled with a little bit of care. Both mediums can be smudged while out of the frame. Both require "spacers" to put distance between the painting and the glass in the frame to protect them from damage. I urge caution while putting pastel paintings into or taking them out of a frame.
Watercolor Paintings
To protect watercolor paintings from damage while they are not in a frame, just keep them away from liquids. Watercolors do not have a protective coating on them.
Oil Paintings
After they dry, I apply Winsor & Newton's Artisan varnish. This durable surface will protect your painting for many years. I recommend a light dusting of the frame and painting each time you dust. This helps to cut down on the build up of a layer of grime over time.
Lighting
The quality of paints has increased greatly over the last generation. None-the-less, in order to further decrease the chance of fading, I recommend that paintings be hung where they do not get exposed to long periods of direct sunlight.
With careful handling and placement, your original painting will be yours to enjoy now and for generations to come.
